Above the fold is the area of a website that visitors see immediately – even before they scroll. This is where it often takes just a few seconds to decide whether someone stays or clicks away.
Mini quiz: What does “Above the Fold” mean?
Choose an answer – you will receive feedback directly.
Above the Fold looks different depending on the device – it is always the area that you can see without scrolling.
What exactly is Above the Fold?
“Above the Fold” originally comes from the newspaper world: this was the part of the newspaper that you can see at first glance when it is folded. On websites, it means: everything that is immediately visible before you scroll down. Important: Above the Fold is not a fixed “pixel area”, but depends on the screen and device (desktop, tablet, smartphone). Is Above the Fold the same on desktop and mobile?
Not quite – the content should be equally clear, but the presentation is often different.- Desktop: more space – text and image can be next to each other
- Tablet: often more compact – elements slide closer together
- Smartphone: less height – headlines, buttons and menus must be greatly reduced
But the goal always remains the same: to make it clear in seconds what the issue is and what the next step is.
What should Above the Fold definitely contain?
For beginner websites: Keep it simple. Above the Fold doesn’t need much – but it must be clear.- 1 clear headline: What do you offer? (without empty phrases)
- 1-2 sentence explanation: Who is it for and what is the benefit?
- Call-to-action (CTA): e.g. “Contact”, “Enquiry”, “Find out more”
- Confidence signal: e.g. short statement, evaluation, “100+ projects” (if appropriate)
Tip:
Above the Fold is closely linked to the Hero area (usually the Hero is the most important part “above the fold”).

Why is Above the Fold so important?
Many visitors do not scroll automatically. If it is not clear at the top what the website does, many click back immediately.- First impression: often decided within a few seconds
- Orientation: Visitors immediately understand “Am I in the right place?”
- More clicks: a clear CTA leads to the next step faster
- Fewer bounces: clear message prevents confusion

Typical mistakes above the fold (and how to avoid them)
The biggest conversion errors occur at the top of self-built websites in particular:- Unclear headline: “Welcome” says nothing
- Too much text: long paragraphs instead of 1 clear statement
- No button: Visitors don’t know what to do
- Poor legibility: Text on image without contrast
- Mobile ignored: at the top you only see menu + huge picture
Above the fold vs. navigation/header – which is which?
Above the fold is not the same as header. The header (top with logo/navigation) is usually “above the fold”, but Above the Fold is the entire visible start area.- Header: upper area with logo & navigation
- Navigation: the menu (often in the header)
- Above the fold: everything you can see without scrolling (incl. header and mostly hero)

Conclusion: Above the Fold decides whether visitors stay
Above the fold is the visible start area without scrolling. If it’s clear in just a few seconds what it’s about and what the next step is, people stay on the website longer – and are more likely to continue clicking. FAQ – short & simple
What does “Above the Fold” mean for websites?
Above the fold is the area of a website that is immediately visible without scrolling. This is where it often takes just a few seconds to decide whether visitors stay or click away. That’s why the headline, short explanation and a clear next step (button) should be directly visible – especially for beginner websites. Is Above the Fold the same as the Hero area?
Often yes – but not always. The hero area is usually the most important part “above the fold” because it is right at the top. However, above the fold generally means the entire visible area without scrolling, including the header/navigation. Read more: What is a Hero area? How big is Above the Fold?
There is no fixed size. Above the fold depends on the device and the screen height. On a smartphone, the visible area is smaller than on a desktop, and browser bars or large menus also take up space. It is therefore important to always test the start area on mobile, tablet and desktop. What should Above the Fold definitely contain?
A clear headline (what are you offering), 1-2 explanatory sentences and a clearly visible call-to-action (CTA). Trust signals such as short reviews or a reference to experience are optional – but only if it really fits. The important thing is: not overloaded, but immediately understandable. Why do visitors bounce so quickly when Above the Fold is bad?
Because people make decisions very quickly online. If the start area is unclear (e.g. “Welcome” without a statement), if there is no button or if you only see a large image on your cell phone, there is a lack of orientation. Many people then click back without even scrolling. A clear start area significantly reduces these bounces. Is Above the Fold important for SEO?
Indirectly, yes. Google primarily evaluates whether users are satisfied. If visitors bounce immediately, that’s a bad signal. A clear above-the-fold area improves orientation, clicks and dwell time – and this supports good rankings in the long term. It also helps to make important content visible quickly. In this article
