A call-to-action (CTA) is a clear request of what visitors should do next – usually in the form of a button or link. A good CTA makes it easy to click and take the next step (e.g. get in touch or find out more).
Definition in one sentence: A call-to-action (CTA) is a button or link with a clear request for action – for example, “Contact us” or “Request a quote”.
Example of a call-to-action: The orange button on the website is the CTA

Example: The orange button is the call-to-action (CTA) – it clearly shows what happens next.

What exactly is a CTA?

A CTA is the element that “guides” visitors. Instead of just reading, they should take an action – for example, click, send a request or view something. For this to work, the CTA must be clear, visible and understandable. Many websites lose visitors because the information is there – but nobody knows what the next step is. This is exactly what a good call-to-action solves.

Examples of call-to-actions (simple)

A CTA is often a button, but can also be a link or a short sentence. Typical CTA examples:
  • “Make contact” (very clear, almost always works)
  • “Learn more” (good for info pages)
  • “Start now” (for processes/instructions)
  • “Request free of charge” (if you want a request)

Where is the best place to place a CTA?

CTAs work best where visitors make a decision. Good places are:
  • At the top of the Hero section (directly at the start of the page)
  • After important paragraphs (when a question has been answered)
  • At the bottom of the page (if someone has read everything)
  • In the navigation (e.g. “Contact” as a button in the header)

Why is a call to action so important?

A CTA turns “visitors” into real “actions”. Without a CTA, many read briefly – and then leave again. With a clear CTA, they know immediately what they should do.
  • More clicks: visitors find the next step faster
  • Fewer jumps: clear guidance instead of confusion
  • Better conversion: more inquiries, downloads or contacts
  • More structure: the site looks planned instead of random

Typical CTA mistakes (and how to avoid them)

Beginner websites in particular often have these problems:
  • Too unclear: “Click here” does not say what happens
  • Too many CTAs: 5 buttons at the same time overwhelm
  • Too hidden: CTA is small or gets lost in the design
  • No benefit: Visitors don’t know why they should click
  • Mobile forgotten: Button too small or difficult to click

CTA vs. button: Is it the same thing?

A button is just the form. A CTA is the function behind it. In other words, a button only becomes a CTA when it contains a clear call to action (and is placed in a meaningful way).

Conclusion: A CTA tells visitors what happens next

A call-to-action is one of the most important building blocks on any website because it provides orientation and triggers clicks. If you create your website yourself, make sure that your CTA is clear, visible and understandable – then the page immediately appears more structured and guides visitors better.

FAQ – short & simple

What is a call-to-action (CTA) on a website? A call-to-action (CTA) is a clear request for the next action – usually in the form of a button or link. It tells visitors directly what they should do, for example “Get in touch”, “Find out more” or “Request a quote”. A good CTA makes the next step easy and reduces uncertainty because you don’t have to think about where to click.
Which CTA examples work best? CTAs that specifically state what is happening work best. Examples are “Contact us”, “Enquire now”, “Find out more” or “Make an appointment”. For beginner websites: 1 clear CTA is better than several different buttons that confuse. It is important that the text is understandable and fits the goal of the page.
Where should a CTA be placed? CTAs belong where visitors make a decision: at the top (hero), after important paragraphs and at the end of a page. Once someone has found an answer, there is a good chance that they will want to continue. A well-placed CTA “catches” this moment and leads to the next step – without having to scroll up again.
How many call-to-actions should a page have? For most pages, one main CTA (e.g. “Contact”) plus an optional second, less important CTA (e.g. “Learn more”) is sufficient. Too many buttons at the same time are overwhelming because nobody knows what the right click is. A clear priority is almost always better for conversion.
What is the difference between a CTA and a button? A button is just the element (the form). A CTA is the call to action (the function). A button without a clear message is not a good CTA. Only when the text is specific and the placement makes sense does the button become a call-to-action that really leads visitors.
Why do visitors sometimes not click despite the CTA? The CTA is often too unclear, too hidden or lacks a reason to click. If visitors don’t understand what benefit they are getting, they won’t click. Therefore, make sure the words are clear, the visibility is good and the CTA is positioned exactly where the question has just been answered.
